Zona Kay Holub, 78, of Coggon, Iowa, died Friday, March 4, 2016, at Unity Point St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, in hospice, where her family and friends gathered together to be with her. Visitation: 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, with a scripture service beginning at 3:30 pm. Funeral Mass: 10:30 am Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Coggon. Burial: Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Coggon.
Survivors include her husband, Gene Holub of Coggon; three sons, Curtis Holub of Coggon, Val (Kerri) Holub of Williamsburg, and Gordie Holub of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Jacob, Josh and Jillian of Williamsburg, and Jordan of McAlester, Oklahoma; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Walton of Troy Mills, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Teresa (Mark) Mumaw of Walker, Iowa, Chris (Angie) Walton of Coggon, Dennis Thompson, and Barb Brislawn and families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Coy Walton; a sister, Carol Lee Thompson; and a niece, Suzette Sherrets.
Zona was born February 17, 1938, to Carl Raymond and Wilma Gertrude (McCright) Walton. She graduated from Troy Mills High School in 1956. Zona married Gene Holub September 10, 1960, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairieburg.
Zona was a beautician for forty years in the Coggon area. She worked side by side with her husband, Gene, at their business, Holub’s Feed Store for many years. She sold Watkins and Stanley at her home.
Zona was very active in her sons’ school activities. She was a cub scout leader and an active cub master. She was in charge of the football booster club at the Harvest Home for 15 years. She also organized the soup supper at St. John’s Catholic Church in Coggon for twenty years. Zona was a member of St. John’s Rosary Society and an active member of the Red Hatter’s.
Zona enjoyed working in her flower garden with Gene at her side. She loved spending time with Gene, her sons and daughter-in-law and her grandchildren.
