Zereta Eustatia Mitchell, 95, a resident of the Villages at Marion, died Monday, January 12, 2015, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 16, 2015, at First United Methodist Church, Marion, by Pastor Mike Morgan. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2015, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Burial: Springville Cemetery, 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 16, 2015.

Survivors include her children, Bill (Charity) Mitchell of Springville, Kay (Ken) Stanford of Marion, and Bob Mitchell of Marion; son-in-law, Dave Saari of Hiawatha; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; sister, Margaret (Bill) Smith of Brodhead, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Karen Saari; siblings, Loren, Rolland, Nathen, Daral, and Darldine; sister-in-law, Bessie Bassett Klopp; granddaughter, Kris; and great-granddaughter, Ashley.

Zereta was born May 10, 1919, in Springville, Iowa, the daughter of Clelland and Vernie (Hoag) Port. She graduated from Viola High School in 1937, and married Maurice Mitchell on June 18, 1941, in Lancaster, MO. She was a homecare provider, and also worked as a cook for Linn Mar schools for 19 years. Zereta was a member of First United Methodist Church, Marion, and an honorary member of the Prairie Chapel’s United Methodist Women.

Zereta was an amazing cook and greatly enjoyed time spent in the kitchen. She liked crossword puzzles, word search puzzles, and sewing. Zereta also liked spending time outdoors, gardening and farming. She played piano and had a great love of music.
