Zeola Irene Rogers, 94, of Central City, died Friday, December 21, 2007 at her home, following a lingering illness. Services: 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at United Church of Christ, Central City, Iowa, by Rev. Jonna Jensen. The family will greet friends from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., on Wednesday, at the church, where a light lunch will be available. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello, Iowa. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Central City, Iowa.
Survivors include one son, Keith (Judy) Rogers of Avon, Illinois; one daughter, Mary (Leon) Harbaugh of Earlville, Iowa; a sister Bertha (Burlingham) Page of Marion, Iowa; three granddaughters, Debbie Rogers of Hilliard, Ohio; Michelle (Corey)Torrance of Good Hope, Illinois; and Angela Harbaugh of Earlville, Iowa; two great-grandsons, Trevor and Owen Torrance of Good Hope, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mamie (Head) Burlingham, and her husband, Daniel Rogers.
Zeola was born February 28, 1913, the daughter of Frank and Mamie (Head) Burlingham, at her parents’ farm near Anamosa, Iowa. Zeola started her teaching career in Jones County and continued her career in Linn County where she met and married Daniel Rogers on June 20, 1936, in Anamosa, Iowa. He died on May 23, 2002. Daniel and Zeola farmed in the Central City community their entire lives and Zeola taught at several schools in the area, including Central City, where they moved when they retired from the farm. Zeola retired from teaching in 1978.
Zeola was a homemaker, a teacher, and a skilled seamstress and quilter. She was a member of United Church of Christ in Central City and has been active in the Central City Historical Society, Eastern Iowa Quilters Association, Piece Makers quilting group, DC Club of Central City, Women’s Fellowship, and the Senior Citizens Center of Central City. She dearly loved spending time with family and friends.
Memorial donations may be left in Zeola’s name to the Historical Society in Central City or Hospice of Mercy, Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.
