Winifred Elizabeth Goodlove Gardner, 91, a resident of the Hiawatha Care Center, formerly of Marion, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, in the care center, following a long illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, by Rev. Del Bear. Burial: Jordan?s Grove Cemetery, rural Central City, with military rites by American Legion Post 298 of Marion. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m.Thursday at the funeral home.
Survivors include a sister, Frances Janet Wilson of Grand Terrace, California; a brother, Willard "Bill? Goodlove of Central City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Helen Story and Mildred Smola; and three brothers, Covert, Donald and Cecil Goodlove.
Winifred was born the daughter of Earl Lee and Fannie Vesta (McAtee) Goodlove on July 2, 1912, in rural Central City. Winifred graduated from Central City High School in 1930 and from Coe College in 1954. She married Vance Gardner in 1948 in St. Louis, Missouri. He died in 1966. Winifred served in the Women?s Army Corps (WAC?S) during World War II in France.
Winifred began teaching in rural schools in Linn County and after over thirty years of teaching at Riverside, Central City, and Cedar Rapids, she retired from Hiawatha Elementary. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion where she was a member of the quilting group.
