Winifred “Bonnie” Canady, 86, a resident of Willow Gardens Care Center, Marion, died there Monday, February 7, 2011. Services: 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 12, 2011, at First United Methodist Church, Marion. The family will greet friends from 4 – 8 p.m., Friday, February 11, 2011, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Burial: 1:30 p.m., Saturday, February 12, 2011, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Central City, Iowa.
Winifred "Bonnie" Canady was born on February 26th, 1924 to William H. and Clara Newman. She grew up in Central City with her 2 sisters, Helen and Delores and her brother Ellis. They all worked at her parent's family-owned bakery downtown. She graduated from Central City High School in 1941. She then married Floyd and had three children, Vaughn (Sandy), Claude (Lyn) and Tona. They lived in Marion where Winifred was a bookkeeper for many years and enjoyed time in the garden. During the later years of her life, Winifred worked at Wal-Mart and the Salvation Army.
She participated in the Senior Olympics for 16 years, volunteered at the FUMC, and was a lifetime caregiver. After her divorce, Winifred met the late Robert Bex and together they raised 2 of her grandchildren, Shelley (Jeff) Keller and Scarlett (Roger) Kropp. During their 25 years together they enjoyed going to flea markets, roller skating, and attending sporting activities. Winifred loved spending her free time with her closest 4 great-grandchildren, Hannah, Chris, Isabelle and Alexander.
She is survived by 2 children, Vaughn of South Dakota and Claude of Florida. She has 6 grandchildren, Heather (Brad) Cave, Shelley (Jeff) Keller, Erika (Brad) Haas, Scarlett (Roger) Kropp, Aaron (Jessika) Canady, and Drew (Melissa) Canady and 13 great-grandchildren.
Winifred was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and 2 sisters, her daughter Tona and her granddaughter Candice. She'll be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Winifred’s memory.
