Willis Louis Schultz, 78, of 2770 14th Ave., Marion, died Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2007, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elgin, Iowa, by the Rev. Rick Johnson. Burial: Elgin Cemetery, with military honors. The family will greet friends from 5 -- 8 p.m. Friday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Lauretta; his children, Julie (David) Cleveland of Carbondale, Colorado, Craig (Dawn) Schultz of California City, California, and Brad (Sheri) Schultz of Bettendorf, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Kira, Kerisha, Karissa, Spencer, Marshall, Katelynn and Bricelyn; two brothers, Floyd (Phyllis) Schultz of Auburndale, Florida, and Carlas (Elsie) Schultz of Davenport, Iowa; a sister, Eudora (Jerry) Moore of Midland, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Wesley, Eldon and Emil Jr.

Willis was born (and raised) in the Postville, Iowa, area on December 3, 1928, the son of Emil Schultz Sr. and Mabel Schultz. He graduated from Postville High School and attended radio school in Omaha. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army as a radio repairman and carrier for the Ethiopian Battalion. Willis had once worked as a radio operator at WPRE in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. He was united in marriage to Lauretta Gilson on August 23, 1953, in Elgin, Iowa. Willis was employed at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1991, after nearly 40 years there.

He taught Sunday School and was a Boy Scout leader for many years. Willis was a member of the woodcarver's associations in Cedar Rapids and Arizona. He was a lifetime member of both the V.F.W. and the Marion American Legion Post 298. While growing up, Willis was a member of St Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville and was currently a member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Marion.

He and Lauretta enjoyed wintering in Arizona and taking scenic drives. Willis was a multi-talented man who could fish, hunt, camp and enjoyed reading, sewing, and gardening, and could fix just about anything.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Boy Scouts of America or the American Diabetes Associaton in Willis' memory.
