William "Bill? E. Myers, Jr., 89, of Heritage Nursing & Rehab Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at the care center, following a short illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Gary Dobbins. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m Thursday, April 29, 2004, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites.
Survivors include his two sons, Ronald Myers and wife Patricia of Tucson, Arizona, and Gary Myers and wife Carolyn of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Julie Velez of Winchester, Virginia, Rodney Myers and wife Melinda of Cedar Rapids and Jonathan Myers and wife Renae of Coralville; a stepson, Bernard Briggman and wife Elma of Tucson; four great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Mary Ann Owen of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Belva and Gertrude; his brothers and sisters, Vera, Helen, Nellie, Virginia, Merle, Leroy, Chester, Raymond, Edward, Thora, Neva and Nora.
Bill was born May 9, 1914, the son of William and Anna (Priest) Myers, in Nebraska City, Nebraska. He served with the United States Army in Europe with the First Army, 30th Infantry during World War II. Bill was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and two Purple Heart Medals. On September 8, 1931, he was united in marriage to Belva Blagdon in Rock Port, Missouri. She died September 17, 1963. Bill married Gertrude Briggman on April 2, 1965. She died May 23, 1981. A lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, he worked for the Rock Island Railroad until they closed and then became a lifetime member of the Carpenters Union Local 308. Bill was a lifetime member of the American Legion 298, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars 788, 30th Infantry Division, American Prisoners of War and the Order of the Purple Heart Association.
