A memorial service for William Howard King, 80, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2003, at the Marion High School Auditorium. The Rev. Emory Gillespie, pastor of the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church, will preside and the Eastern Iowa Brass Band will participate.
Mr. King, a longtime Marion resident, died August 31, 2003.
He is survived by a daughter, Marybeth Kantner and husband Carl of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sons, Kenneth King and wife Chon-Hye King of Lansing, Kansas, and James King of St. Charles, Missouri; and two grandchildren, Carl William and Elizabeth Kantner.
William (Bill) King was born January 6, 1923, in Cawker City, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; his father, Harlen D. King; his mother, Besse Gaston Blankenship; and stepfather, Jesse Blankenship.
He enrolled at Drake University, Des Moines, before World War II and was drum major for the marching band. During the war, he was a pilot and flight instructor on B-17 and A-26 aircraft for the U.S. Army Air Force, and held commercial multi-engine ratings. He married Marjorie Christiansen in 1944. After the war, he completed his studies at Drake and received a degree in chemistry. He served in the Air Force Reserves until 1971, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service.
His employment career included working with Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, Maryland. He directed the photography department of Collins Radio Company in the 1950s and early ?60s, and also worked for HyTone Film Laboratories, Des Moines. He later owned Microfilm Services Co., Cedar Rapids, and worked at WMT-TV. Prior to retirement, he was a cartographer for the Linn County assessor. He was a member of East Side Kiwanis and First Presbyterian Church of Marion, served on the Marion Library board and was a longtime supporter of the Eastern Iowa Brass Band.
