William J. "Jim? Barr, 72, was taken to his heavenly reward on February 1, 2007, at Living Center West, Cedar Rapids, following a lengthy illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2007, at Hope Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Dan Clark-Bridges, where friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his mother, Grace Barr Lueder of Cedar Rapids; and a stepbrother, Dr. Robert Godwin of Bettendorf, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Barr; stepfather, Alvin Lueder; and an aunt, Meta Lueder.
Jim was born October 31, 1934, in Des Moines, Iowa and adopted by Grace and Walter Barr. He earned his GED from Kirkwood College in 1992. Jim never met a stranger and always had a "Hello?, How are you doing?? for everyone. Jim was a proud 45 years Minnesota Vikings fan and never gave up on The Cubs.
His great love was doing yard work. Jim never tired of talking about his years of working for Parks Commissioner Don Gardner. In later years, he took great pride in the work he did at his beloved Hope Lutheran Church. While living at Hawthorne Hills, he could be seen daily picking up cans for a Hope Lutheran Church fund raiser or raking the yard at the apartment to keep it neat and clean. Jim will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Special thanks to Tammi and Jim?s friends at Hawthorne Hills, who made his last three years happy ones. Special thanks to all of Jim?s helpful friends working at the Wilson Avenue Drugtown and Hy-Vee. Also special thanks for the gentle care and hope given by Dr. Fusselman, nurses and staff of Iowa Blood and Cancer Care, Hospice of Mercy and Living Center West.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the General Fund of Hope Lutheran Church, 2736 Bowling Street SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404, in memory of Jim.
Rest in Peace, dear Friend.
