William Allen Eggert
August 24, 1919 — March 28, 2003
William Allen "Homy? Eggert, 83, of Springville, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, March 28, 2003, at St. Luke?s Hospital. Homy was the youngest son born to William and Madge (McQuillan) Eggert on August 24, 1919 in New Liberty, Iowa. He graduated from Bennett High School in 1940. In January of 1941, Homy became the first peacetime draftee from Cedar County. He served in the 4th Calvary during World War II and was among the forces that landed in Normandy, France on D-Day. Upon his return from the service, he was joined in marriage to Bertha Genia Reed on November 18, 1945 in Springville and together they have owned and farmed the 120-acre Reed family farm in Springville.
In addition to his loving wife, Bertha "Bert? Eggert, Homy is survived by his sons, Paul (Giuliana) Eggert of Aurora, Illinois and Mark Eggert of Kewaskum, Wisconsin and his sister, Lois "Bea? Berodt of Silver Springs, Maryland. Homy will be dearly remembered by his grandchildren, Jennifer (Shane) Leytem of Mechanicsville, Erin Edenfield of Springville and Julia and William Eggert of Aurora, Illinois.
Homy?s life and times will be fondly recounted to his great-grandchildren, Devin and Prestin Leytem of Mechanicsville, Ciara Eggert and Taylor Edenfield of Springville as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Homy was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Earl "Butler? Eggert, Wilbur "Bub? Eggert and Francis "Francie? Eggert.
Homy was a member of the Springville United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of American Legion Post No. 331 of Springville.
Family and friends are invited to remember Homy during a visitation from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at the Springville United Methodist Church by Rev. John Keizer. Interment will follow at the Springville Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post No. 331 of Springville.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Homy?s memory.
