Born January 14th, 1935, in Cedar Rapids to William and Theodora (Koenig) Vosdingh, Bill’s passion for life was evident at a very young age. From learning to double-clutch his dad’s milk delivery truck to the kick of a 12-gauge shotgun, Bill grew up learning that life had adventure and fun to offer at every turn…if you were willing to look for it! He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids in 1953 and began a long career working at Square D (Schneider Electric) in 1955, finally retiring in 2015.
Bill married Janet Goodyear of Monticello in September 1953 and they had 3 sons: Michael and David of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Steven (Cheryl) of Granite Falls, North Carolina. He had three grandsons: Alex and Austin of Cedar Rapids and Jacob of Granite Falls, North Carolina.
Bill subsequently married Joyce A. (Merchant) Vosdingh in 1980 and they shared life together for 30+ years, both in rural Solon and in Cedar Rapids.
Later in life, Bill was reunited with childhood friend Susan (Wenger) Halstead and the two were married on December 31, 2014. Together, these two loved all aspects of life, including the little things like playing cards and traveling to visit family, including Susan’s daughter Kristine (Mike) Kvach of Cedar Rapids, and brother, Russ (Mary Ann) Wenger of Springfield, Missouri.
Bill loved bicycling, motorcycling, photography, auto racing, trap shooting and being highly active throughout his life. He was passionate about nature, and he expressed this passion in many different ways…from riding the second-ever RAGBRAI with Janet to walking the trails of Lake Macbride to logging 500,000 miles on BMW motorcycles. Bill could also be found exploring backroads on two or four wheels or trap shooting at Otter Creek Gun Club (of which he was a founding member) or on farm land in Coggon.
Continuing his legacy are his wife, Susan and her family, his sister Marlene, his children: Mike, Dave, and Steve, and his grandchildren Austin and Jacob. Additionally, there are numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who were a part of his life. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Janet (Goodyear) Lohman, and grandson Alex.
The family would like to thank the staff at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, specifically doctors Dionne Skeete, MD, Annika Storey, DO and Joseph Crum, DO, nurses Elise, Taylor, Troy and the countless other resident physicians, nurses, techs and therapists that provided exceptional care in Bill’s final few weeks.
A memorial fund has been established with proceeds to be split between several of Bill’s passions.
