William “Bill” J. Carpenter , 85, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2012. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 28, 2012 conducted by Rev. Michael Druhl at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home in, Manchester, IA. Visitation will be 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester and hour prior to services on Friday. Burial: Thorpe Cemetery, rural Manchester with Military Honors.
Bill was born November 11, 1927 at Manchester, the son of William Harrison and Lydia (Chambers) Carpenter Sr. He attended West Delaware Schools. Bill first married Rosa Shankle to this union were born 5 children, Eugene, Katherine, William F., Marsha and Robert. On November 4, 1957, he married Erma (Rucker) at Rockton, Ill., to this union were born 3 children, William “Scott”, Dianne, and Dawn.
Bill was a crane operator for many years, working for Guetzko, Blooms, and Bacons retiring in 2003. Bill also served in the US Army during World War II.
Bill enjoyed playing lots of bingo, tinkering in his garage cleaning copper wire and iron, and listening to music. He especially enjoyed his family.
Bill is survived by his wife, Erma of 57 years; children, William “Scott” (Angela Rounds) Carpenter of Manchester, Dianne (Del) Walton of Quasqueton, Dawn (Jerry) Bond of Manchester, Eugene (LuAnn) Carpenter of Winterset, Katherine (Bob) Strief of Masonville, William F. (Wendy) Carpenter of Manchester, Marsha Carpenter of Tipton, Robert Carpenter of West Union, Bill (Paula) Porter of Alburnett, and Jerry (Dianne) Lewin of Hooper, Nebraska. Bill and Erma also raised Burton (Billie) LeClere, Shelly (Dennis) Chapman, and Renae (Travis) Chapman; 31 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Helen Casteel, Mabel Letts, and Genevieve Dorsey; a brother, George Carpenter; three great–great-granddaughters, Harley, Kayla and Felicity; and a great-great-grandson, Dalton.
A memorial fund has been established in Bill's memory.
