William “Bill” R. Armstrong, 81, of Marion, died Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center, following an extended illness. Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Mike Morgan. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Private family burial will be held.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Armstrong; his son Gary (Pat) Armstrong of Storm Lake; his daughter, Becky (Daryl) Braun of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Terra (Matt) Heaton, Kari (Cory) Benore, and Kristi Braun, all of Cedar Rapids, Anne (Ben) Daniels of North Liberty, Jane (Steve) Hockman of Denver, Colorado, and John Armstrong of Iowa City; and a great-grandchild, Avery Heaton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barbara Gibney.

Bill was born January 25, 1926, the son of Reuben and Ethel (Law) Armstrong in Marion. He served with the U.S. Army from 1944-1946 in the European Theater and participated in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. Bill was awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He married Beverly Walker on December 21, 1947, in Marion and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1949. Bill was a manager for Sherwin Williams in Marion and later a salesman for Allied Glass in Cedar Rapids.

Bill was a member of American Legion Post No. 298 of Marion, VFW, the Elks in Cedar Rapids, and 69th Infantry Division Association.

Bill and Beverly wintered in Corpus Cristi, Texas. He was an avid Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinal fan. Bill enjoyed reading, golfing and dancing. He was a former member of Indian Creek Country Club.

A memorial fund has been established in Bill’s memory.
