Wilfred E. Tlusty, 87, of 2124 Mallory St. SW, a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, June 12, 2008, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, following an extended illness. A memorial gathering will be from 1-4 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2008, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. Burial: 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids conducted by Hanford American Legion Post #5.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; three children, Sheryl (Dan) Kobusch of Cedar Rapids, Tony Tlusty of Cedar Rapids, and David (Joanne) Swenka of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Scott and Robin Swenka, Dillon and Angela Kobusch, and Brad, Greg, and Ed Tlusty; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Ted O. Tlusty.
Wilfred was born July 11, 1920, the son of plumber Edwin and Julia (Zbanek) Tlusty in Cedar Rapids. His grandfather, Anton, was a city health officer. He went to old Hayes and VanBuren schools and graduated from Wilson High School in January of 1939. Having an after school job at Western Union. He worked for Baldridge Camera Shop and Cedar Rapids Dental Laboratory before leaving for the U.S. Navy in August of 1942. He served aboard the submarine chaser PC1125 and the sea going Tug USS Salinan ATF161 in the South Pacific and invasion of Guam and Sipan. On May 31, 1952, he married Evelyn Vomacka Swenka in Cedar Rapids. He worked for Lefebure Corp for thirty-nine years, retiring in 1985.
Wilfred loved to travel, reaching most of the 48 states, Canada, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Czechoslovakia. He was a life member of the Cedar Rapids Stamp Club and the National Railroad Historical Society.
A memorial fund has been established in Wilfred’s memory.
