Wencil S. "Wish? Wishniewsky, 88, of 999 - 11th Street, Marion, died Friday, September 30, 2005, in St. Luke?s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a sudden illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Howard Chapman. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-four years, Janet; his children, Gladys Clearwaters-Ford (Tony) of Bethesda, Maryland, JoAnne (Mike) Hebert of Cedar Rapids and Don Wishniewsky of Marion; two sisters, Helen (John) Anthony of Del Mar, California, and Lynn (Bill) Yeomans of La Habra, California; five grandchildren, Brian Clearwaters of Alexandria, Virginia, Deborah Clearwaters (Andrew McIntyre) of San Francisco, Michelle (Bob) Laufenburger of Boise, Idaho, Christy Hebert of Cedar Falls and Michael (Tracy) Hebert of Marion; and three great-grandchildren, Jason, Kayla and Allie Laufenburger.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bolek.
"Wish? was born July 20, 1917, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Jerry and Antonia Mrowiec Wishniewsky. He and Janet Derflinger were united in marriage in Kahoka, Missouri, on April 17, 1941. "Wish? served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his military service he returned to his former employer, The Quaker Oats Company, where he worked in supervision and sales. "Wish? was a dedicated and loyal employee and proud of his long service at Quaker.
A graduate of Wilson High School in 1936, "Wish? was very active in sports while growing up. He and several teammates still gathered for monthly get-togethers. Being such an avid sportsman, he passed along his love of sports to his children and grandchildren, who followed in his footsteps with their involvement. He enjoyed watching his family participate in all sporting events, taping them with his camcorder, and because of this he was commonly known as "Grandpa Wish? by the high school and college athletes. He especially enjoyed following Iowa Hawkeyes athletics. Other interests included traveling, bowling, mall walking and tending to his yard and flowers. He also took a great interest in photography and scrapbooking.
"Wish? was a 49-year member and deacon of First Presbyterian Church in Marion, a 60-year member of Trojan Masonic Lodge No. 548, A.F. & A.M., and a former member of Marion American Legion Post 298, which will provide military honors.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, who touched many lives in many different ways. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
