Wayne A. Griffioen

Wayne A. Griffioen, 71, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 9, 2014. Services: 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 13, 2014, at the Oakland Church of Nazarene, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. David King. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 12, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Patricia; his children, Mark (Lyn) Griffioen of Swisher, Danny (Dawn Siemering) Griffioen and Sherri (Bonn) Hawkins, all of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Johnathan, Michael and Nicholas Griffioen, Brooke and Blake Hawkins; and sister, Arlene Drees of Hammond, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sherry Katherine; twin brother and wife, Duane (Louella) Griffioen; sister, Joyce Casper; and brother-in-law, Dick Drees.
Wayne was born April 18, 1943, the son of John and Lahoma (Bell) Griffioen, in California. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1961. On August 2, 1964, he married Patricia Norris in Cedar Rapids. Wayne started working in a body shop in Leon, Iowa, and was a welder at Linkbelt Speeder where he worked for 23 ½ years, retiring in 1985. He then began to work for Brinks Armored Car and for Amana Refrigeration. Wayne received his black belt and was owner and sensei at Iowa School of Goju-ryu Karate.
He was a faithful member of the Oakland Church of Nazarene and Jack’s Garage Christian Men’s Group. Wayne enjoyed skydiving, scuba diving, and had his multi-engine pilot license. But most of all, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Make A Wish Foundation of NE Iowa, in memory of Wayne.
