Wayland "Waylie? Boren Sr., 78, of Manchester, Iowa died Saturday morning, October 12, 2002 at Regional Medical Center, after a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester,

Iowa, with the Rev. Kurt Pasto officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, October 14, 2002, and one hour before the service on Tuesday, at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Manchester, Iowa.

Waylie was born on February 26, 1924, in Grundy Center, to Elza McKinley Boren and Julia Marie "Sadie? Himschoot. He attended school in Grundy Center. He spent a short time in the Merchant Marines before joining the United States Navy in 1943. Waylie served as a radar man during World War II, on the destroyer, U.S.S. Kimberly, in the Pacific Ocean. He fought in five major battles and was awarded two purple hearts. After being discharged from the Navy, on August 15, 1945, he moved to Waterloo and worked in a grocery store. Later he went to work for Chamberlain Manufacturing, also in Waterloo. On January 20, 1946, Waylie was united in marriage to LuEttaMae "Pete? Call. In the fall of 1946, he moved to Grundy Center and opened a Pool Hall. In February 1950, Wayland returned to run the "Maid Rite? Shop on the east side of downtown Waterloo. After moving back to Grundy Center in September 1950, he accepted a job for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. In 1951, he again returned to Waterloo to work for the Firestone Company. In February 1955, Waylie moved to Manchester and formed a partnership, Smitty?s Tire & Appliance Store, with W.W. Smith of Cedar Falls. He retired in 1984, after his son Max, purchased the business. Wayland and Pete spent the winter months vacationing in Cape Coral, Florida.

Survivors include his wife, LuEttaMae "Pete? Boren of Manchester; his four children and their spouses; Debra Lu (Garry) Dunn of Manchester, W. Max (Susan) Boren, Jr. of Manchester, Susan Marie (Scott) McDonald of Dallas, Texas and Becky Jo (Joe) O?Connell of Potosi, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elza & Julia Boren; two brothers, Bud and Vern Boren and two sisters, Gerry Hargis and Vivian Clark.

Wayland was a member of the Community Congregational United Church of Christ, Manchester, life-member of the V.F.W., and a member of the American Legion in Manchester and the Moose Lodge in Cape Coral, Florida. He loved to hunt, fish and trap shooting and enjoyed wine making, organic gardening and watching the St. Louis Rams. Waylie is remembered for his story-telling.
