Walter R. Wharton, 76, a resident of ManorCare Health Services, died peacefully, Thursday, November 17, 2005, at the care center, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer?s Disease. Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 19, 2005, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Chaplain Louis Bell. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Friday) at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Charlene; a sister, Rose (Bill) White of Cedar Rapids; a brother-in-law, Marvin (Doris) Stanek of Walford; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Wharton of Cedar Rapids and Beverly (Scott) Sonnkalb of Ripon, Wisconsin; his mother-in-law, Nellie Stanek of Cedar Rapids; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Louis; and a sister, Nellie Frondle.
Walter was born July 18, 1929, to proud parents, John and Edna (Chapman) Wharton, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On August 3, 1958, he was united in marriage to Charlene Stanek in Covington, Iowa. They enjoyed 47 loving years together. For 31 years, Walter worked for the City of Cedar Rapids as an Urban Forester. In his younger days, he enjoyed roller skating with Charlene, tae kwan do and bowling. Walter also enjoyed country music and reading the comics in the Sunday paper.
The family would like to sincerely thank ManorCare and Amenity Hospice Staff for the wonderful care they provided to Walter.
