Walter Alfred Simon, 70, of 5234 Alice Road, Walker, died Monday, May 5, 2003, after a long lingering illness. Services: 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, by Rev. Gary Dobbins. Friends may call from 4:30 -7:30, Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at the funeral home. Burial: Troy Mills Cemetery
Survivors include his wife, Twila, and sons, James (Linda) of Center Point, and Kevin (Cindy) of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; and four grandchildren, Heather, Kyle, Steven & Sara.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bess Simon and sister, Doris Chapman.
Walter was born June 9, 1932, at Independence, Iowa, to John and Bessie (Baty) Simon. He lived all his life on the Simon Century farm at Walker, Iowa. Walter got his education at Pleasant Prairie Country School on the corner by their farm, and graduated from Troy Mills High School in 1950. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in November of 1951, and served 4 years, receiving his discharge in October, 1955. He was united in marriage on October 6, 1956, to Twila A. Perlenfein at the Methodist Church in Walker, Iowa.
Walter loved the outdoors and in his retirement he enjoyed spending time at his cabin near his farm. He was an avid fisherman, turtle trapper, etc. He was a member of the North Linn Fish and Game Club, where he enjoyed watching his sons and grandsons shoot on Wednesday evenings. The outdoors has been a big part of Walt?s life. Walter enjoyed dancing. He and Twila enjoyed going to dances in a 3 state area as a member of the Cedar Valley Polka Club. Walter was a member of the North Linn School Board, Linn County Democratic Committee, Linn County Farmers Home Adminstration, Linn County Board of Adjustment, American Legion Post 712 of Troy Mills, Eagles Aerie 2272 and the Linn County Farm Bureau.
