Rev. Walter H. Niermann, 80, of Napoleon, Ohio died Friday morning, Feb. 22, 2008 at his home after a short battle with cancer. Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2008, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City, by the Rev. Timothy Zimmerman. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
He was born on July 2, 1927, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Walter and Emma (Nehrt) Niermann. In 1951, he married Elvira M. Ziegelbein of Concordia, Missouri. She preceded him in death in September, 1998.
Walter was a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod pastor, having graduated from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1952. He served three congregations during his ministry: Grace Lutheran in Blairstown, Iowa (1952-1957); Our Redeemer Lutheran in Iowa City, Iowa (1957-1984); and St. Paul Lutheran in Amherst, Ohio (1984-1992). He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids the past eleven years. Most recently he was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Freedom Twp., Napoleon, Ohio.
Surviving are three sons, David Niermann of Minneapolis, MN; Thomas (Pat) Niermann of Mahomet, IL; Rev. Stephen (Bonnie) Niermann of Napoleon, OH; three daughters, Deborah Niermann of Waterloo, IA; Pamela (Kurt) Goebel of Danvers, IL; and Elizabeth Niermann of Stow, OH; 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
