Walter W. Ashbacker, 76, of Solon, Iowa passed away Monday, January 21, 2019, at his home. Visitation: 3 – 7 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2019, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 28, 2019, at the funeral home. Burial: Shueyville Cemetery, Shueyville, Iowa.
Walter was born on April 11, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Walter F. and Nellie (Relf) Ashbacker. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1960. Walter married Janice Melichar on April 10, 1965, in Cedar Rapids. He served in the United States Army Reserves for six years. Walter worked at Rockwell Goss for 38 years as a senior mechanic. He was a lifetime member of the NRA (National Rifle Association) and he was an avid Citizen Band Radio enthusiast. Walter greatly enjoyed the outdoors and he loved to go hunting, camping and fishing. Walter also found great joy in traveling, visiting museums, reading and bird watching.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Ashbacker of Solon; children, Steven Ashbacker of Solon and Michelle Backus of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Milo, Marin and Rowan; siblings, James (Angela) Cavanaugh of Nevada, Inez (Earl) Volkman of Illinois and Yvonne Januschik of Illinois; sister in law, Betty Cavanaugh and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter F. and Nellie Ashbacker; brothers, Cliff Cavanaugh and Ralph (Ruby) Cavanaugh; and son-in-law, Jordan Backus.
