Wallace “Wally” Kenneth Oldfather, 92, longtime resident of Manchester, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood following a brief illness.
Memorial Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 2nd, 2010 at the Manchester United Methodist Church in Manchester by Rev. Roger Henry. Family will greet friends from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Thursday, July 1st, 2010, at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Wally was born January 6, 1918 in Marion, Iowa, the son of Walter and Elva (Hawk) Oldfather. On October 17, 1945, Wally was united in marriage to Mary Williams. He served as a captain with the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII serving in Europe. Wally attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette and was a teacher at the Manchester Schools for 21 years.
Wally was a member of the Manchester United Methodist Church in Manchester, the Manchester UMC Choir for over 40 years; past-president of the Manchester Lions; received the Iowa Hall of Fame award for Volunteerism; and the Melvin Jones Honorary award for service.
Wally is survived by his wife, Mary Oldfather of Manchester; two children, Michael R. (Joyce Ann) Oldfather and Janet Meyers both of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Elva Oldfather; a brother, Melvin Oldfather and a sister, Margaret Copeland.
