Virginia Lois (Sloan) Titler, 90, of Alburnett, died Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Village Ridge in Marion. Services: 10:30 am Monday, May 14, 2012 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion by Rev. Dan Peterson. The family will greet friends from 2-4 pm, Sunday, May 13, 2012 at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Craig Titler, and Sue (Victor) Becker, all of Alburnett; three grandchildren, Cara (Justin) Dix of Mt. Vernon, Dr. Sarah Titler (Eric Chambers) of Iowa City, and Nate (Robin) Titler of Anamosa; six great-grandchildren; her sister, Mildred Kirk of Marion; her brother, Allan Sloan of California; and a sister-in-law Leila Sloan of Alburnett.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a grandson, Nicholas Becker; and her brother, Lee Sloan.
Virginia was born December 9, 1921 in Toddville, the daughter of Robert and Opal (Quaas) Sloan. She graduated from Alburnett in 1940. After graduating, she taught at Martelle Schools and at Alburnett Junior High School, where she coached girls basketball.
On April 28, 1946 she was united in marriage to Robert N. Titler at the Alburnett EUB Church. After raising her family, Virginia was asked to return to teaching at Alburnett. She continued her education, graduating from Coe College with a BA in Art. Virginia retired after serving the children and families of the Alburnett Community School District for over 20 years.
Virginia was a gifted artist and a talented seamstress. She will be remembered for the many dresses and coats she sewed for her granddaughters. Virginia was a member at the Alburnett United Methodist Church and enjoyed time spent with her family and her fellow retired teachers.
The family wishes to thank Hospice Compassus (especially Matt Hoskins and Augusta Grimes) and all of the staff at Village Ridge for their loving care and support.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Virginia’s memory.
