Virginia Eden Oakley, 91, of Marion, passed away Monday, August 8, 2016, at Linn Manor Care Center, Marion. Visitation: 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 11, 2016, at First United Methodist Church, Marion conducted by Pastor Mike Morgan. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion.
Virginia is survived by her son, Nick Oakley of Iowa City; daughters, Virginia Oakley of Seattle, Washington, Darlene Powers of Milford, Iowa and Tierney (Randy) Benesh of Marion ; grandchildren, Luke Oakley of Alexandria, Virginia, Jennifer Powers (Tom) Horner of Santa Rosa, California, Craig Hartle of Cedar Rapids, Zack (Alyssa) Oakley of New York, New York, Brett (Keely Wells) Hartle of Chicago, Illinois, and Kira Powers (Michael) Jensen of Arnold’s Park, Iowa; great-granddaughter, Charolotte Horner of Santa Rosa, California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Steven Oakley and her daughter-in-law, Ann Oakley.
Virginia was born January 30, 1925, in Wesley, Iowa, the daughter of Nick and Rosa Eden. She graduated from West Liberty, Iowa High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, in Iowa City. On September 9, 1950, she married Steven J. Oakley in Iowa City. Virginia was employed at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Paul Orcutt’s, M.D. office, and the Iowa Eye Center. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion and the Marion American Legion Post #298.
Virginia maintained her nursing license into her 80’s. She was an avid card player and belonged to many card clubs. Virginia was a dedicated Iowa Hawkeye fan and she loved ballroom dancing.
