Virginia J. Howe, 98, of Marion Iowa passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 14th, 2024.
She was born on May 10th, 1926 in Waubeek, Iowa to Clarence and Gertrude (Glass) Knapp. She was married to Don Howe in Marion, Iowa in 1946. Virginia started working at Collins Radio at the age of 16. She then married and stayed home to raise her children. She was a sales associate at Armstrong’s department store for many years until her retirement in 1987. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Marion.
Virginia tells of how all her siblings and her were assigned certain chores when growing up. She was happy she was chosen to work in the garden with her mother. She has always been a passionate gardener, sharing all her flowers and plants with her friends, family, and anyone that would visit. Her flowers are scattered throughout the Marion and local areas. She possessed exceptional skills as a seamstress, creating wedding dresses, prom dresses, and clothes for her children and even outfitted dolls. Virginia taught classes in knitting, crocheting and porcelain dolls. She also made beautiful and intricate quilts, making one for several family members. She possessed many skills and all of her gifted talents are deeply loved. She was full of love, kindness, humor and grace. She will be deeply missed, but is now at peace.
Left to cherish her memory include her children Barbara (George Lord) Bryan, and David (Carlene) Howe, grandchildren Kelsey (Nathan) Cook, Andrew (Tracy) Winegardner, Jessie (Amanda) Howe, Matt (Heidi) Howe, and Shane Howe, 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Jim Howe, former husband Don Howe, her parents, two brothers and four sisters.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to niece Diana Smith and daughter-in-law Carlene Howe for their unending care in her latter years. They would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Garnett Place for their exceptional care and friendship.
A celebration of life for Virginia will be scheduled for a later date.
