Virginia Florence Bast, 88, of 940 9th St., died Sunday, February 17, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center, following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 22, 2008, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion where a scripture service will begin at 6 p.m. The family will also greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Gerald (Nancy) Bast of Marion, William (Esther) Bast of Panama, Barbara (Mark) Mathews of Moline, Illinois, Debra Grulkey of Marion, and Robert (Brenda) Bast of Toddville; eleven grandchildren, Nicholas, William G., Edward, and Raymond Bast, William Whisenhunt, Gina Kuedell, Michael and David Mathews, Debra Prieto, Barbara Fleming, and Ellie Heck; sixteen great-grandchildren; and her sister, Marty Hoffa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Lawrence, Raymond, and Donald; and a sister, Dorothy.
Virginia was born the daughter of Harry and Viola (Denten) Gogg in Nashua. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1936. On December 25, 1938, she married Nathan A. Bast. He died in January of 1979. Virginia worked at St. Joseph School and Indian Creek Country Club.
Virginia was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion.
