Virgil R. Richmond, 81, of Oquawka, Illinois passed away on March 13, 2010 at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, Iowa following a short illness.
A memorial service for Virgil Richmond will be held at a later date. Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.
Virgil was born June 11, 1928 to Fred and Lois (Iseman) Richmond on his parents’ farm near Litchfield, NE. Moving to Williamsfield, IL with his family when he was a child, he attended the Williamsfield schools and graduated from Knoxville High School. In 1945, Virgil enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving his Country attached to the U.S. Marine Corps in China during World War II. In 1950, he was united in marriage to Barbara Kearns.
Virgil led a varied lifestyle. He was proud of the time he spent serving his Country. Virgil spent several years farming in IL and IA, and helping his mother. He spent a large part of his working years in sales, where his personable manner and absolute honesty quickly led him into managerial roles. Living in Macomb, IL for a number of years, he acquired an interest in real estate. Retiring to Oquawka, he spent his retirement years enjoying all types of sports, especially fishing on the Mississippi with his brothers. Virgil was a kind man, always taking an opportunity to help others and enlivened friends and family with his great sense of humor and love of laughter. Virgil cared deeply about his family and enjoyed extended family reunions as well. He will be greatly missed.
Virgil is survived by four children: Virginia Richmond Bates of Wichita, KS, Larry Richmond of Manchester, Jess Richmond of Yorkville, IL and Kimberly Richmond of Aurora, CO; two brothers, Lawrence Richmond of Exline, IA and John Richmond of Rockford, IL; and one sister, Evelyn Richmond Huber of Champaign, IL; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Richmond and his parents, Fred and Lois Richmond.
Memorials may be directed to the Good Neighbor Home or Hospice of Comfort, both in Manchester, IA.
