Virgil Lee McArthur, 87, of Central City, died Saturday, April 7, 2007, at St. Luke?s Hospital, from complications of Alzheimer?s disease. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at United Church of Christ in Central City by Rev. Jonna Jensen. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City. Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years, Margaret; his son, V. Douglas (Shirley) McArthur of Central City and their daughter, Amber Lyn and her husband of Hiawatha and their son, Aaron (Stephanie) McArthur of Cedar Rapids; his daughter, Janice (David) Ricklefs of Iowa City and their daughters, Kristin (Joe) Greathouse of Iowa City and Kathy (Kyle) Christianson of Minneapolis; five great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Ethan McArthur, Allison and Emily Greathouse, and Taylor Christianson; and a sister, Jean Rabik of Center Point.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and four sisters.
Virgil was born October 27, 1919, the son of James and Cassie (Hepker) McArthur in rural Linn County. He attended Lewis Bottom country school and graduated from Center Point High School in 1940. On January 14, 1942, he married Margaret Stoecker in rural Center Point. He farmed many years in the Center Point/Central City areas and worked at National Oats for over thirty years, retiring in 1984. Virgil enjoyed time spent with his family.
Virgil was a member of the United Church of Christ in Central City.
