Virgil L. “Fish” Garwood, 83, a long time resident of Cedar Rapids, and currently of Summit Pointe, Marion, died Thursday, January 14, 2010. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 18, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, by Father Rod Allers. The family will greet friends 3-6 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 2010, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Marion, with a Rosary beginning at 5:30 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his wife, Rita; his children, Judi (Alan) Boldra of Omaha, NE, Lori (Pat) Dolan of Iowa City, Patti Garwood of Mundelein, IL, Cyndi (John) Hemesath of Cedar Rapids, and Scott (Kirsten) Garwood of Bolingbrook, IL; his grandchildren, Jennifer and Kyle Boldra, Patrick Dolan, Madelyn and Audrey Hemesath; his siblings, Marcella Olson, Merle (Leota) Garwood, Dennis (Pat) Garwood, all of Cedar Rapids, and Jane (Rich) Himmelsbach of Norway, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Anna (Siepman) Garwood; and siblings, George Garwood, Bernadine Marks, and Ila Duncalf.

Fish was born October 27, 1926, in Norway, IA. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII. Fish married Rita Gatens on September 6, 1952, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Norway, IA. He was employed at Collins Radio/Rockwell for 42 years, retiring in 1989. Fish was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, and was previously a member of St. Pius X.
