Vincent V. Vanis Jr., 88, of Central City, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2007, at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Central City by Rev. Wayne Droessler. Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery in Central City with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Central City.
Survivors include his wife, K. Eileen; two sons, John (Diane) Vanis of Central City and Jim Vanis (Judy Lafler) of Prairieburg; four sisters, Georgia Palmer of Kansas City, Missouri, Matilda (Michael) Danaher of Fairbury, Nebraska, Bibiana (Bill) Schmillen of Cherokee, Iowa, and Eleanor (Gene) Rezac of Fairbury, Nebraska; and a brother, Fred (Dorothy) Vanis of Ulysses, Nebraska.
Also surviving are five grandchildren, Jeff and Mark Vanis and Vanessa, Nathan, and Kyle Vanis. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Mary, a sister, Martha and five brothers, Ray, Henry, Joe, Julius and Ted.
He was born the son of Vincent and Julia (Pekarek) Vanis on July 2, 1918, in Brainard, Nebraska. Vince served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was married to K. Eileen Tritle on August 6, 1947, in Central City at St. Stephens Catholic Church. Vince and Eileen owned and operated the Little Chef Caf? in Central City. He later worked for the United States Postal Service in Central City and served as city clerk and on the city council. He was a member of St. Stephens Catholic Church and a charter member of Central City Amvets Post 37 and American Legion Wapsi Post 421. He was a member of Meadowview Country Club in Central City and was an avid golfer and gardener.
Central City Amvets Post 37 and American Legion Wapsi Post 421 will conduct the military honors.
A memorial fund has been established in Vince?s memory.
