Vernon E. Thoman, 71, of 2117 Balsam Drive S.W., died Saturday, October 18, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center, of cancer. Services: 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 20, 2003, at St. Ludmila?s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids by Father Tom McDermott. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m., Sunday, October 19, 2003, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a 5 p.m., vigil prayer service. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy; his daughters, Mary (Andy) Brown of Poplar Bluff, Missouri and Connie (Dave) Elliott of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Colette Brown of Poplar Bluff, Missouri and Harrison Elliott of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Clarence (Lillian) Thoman of Norway, Iowa and Delmar (Virginia) Thoman of Fairfax, Iowa; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Kathryn Elliott and a brother, Harold.
Vernon was born on March 22, 1932, in Norway, Iowa, the son of Joe A. V. and Elizabeth Laura (Gessner) Thoman. He graduated from Norway High School and married Sandra Lackey on June 24, 1953, at I.C. Church in Cedar Rapids. Vernon served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for International Harvestor Trucks which later became Hawkeye International. He also worked for Mitchell International Trucks in Springfield, Missouri, and then stayed busy with other part time positions until recently. Vernon was a member of St. Ludmila?s Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters and VFW Post 788. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, spending time with his family, friends and his dog, Lady. He was always eager to lend a helping hand to others. Vernon will be greatly missed by his family.
