Vernon Pickering, 79, of Marion, passed away unexpectedly Monday, December 4, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2017, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Friday officiated by Reverend Becky High. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Vernon was born June 5, 1938, in Sumner, Iowa, the son of William and Tena (Schrage) Pickering. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1956. On June 29, 1958, Vernon was united in marriage to Caryl Fridley in Sumner. He was a longtime employee of NCR as a field service technician. Vernon was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Caryl Pickering of Marion; children, Vickie (Bill) Ozburn of Lisbon, Mitch (Janet) Pickering of Marion, Tracy Pickering of Marion, Christy (John) Sevening of Robins, Stacy Pickering of Marion, and Jeremy (Melissa) Pickering of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brian; and brother, James.
