Vernon O. Numedahl, 82, of 125 18th Street S.W., died Friday morning, November 29, 2002, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2002, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Randy Kasch. Military rites will be performed. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Velma; his children, Gail Huerter and husband Gene of Pella, Larry Numedahl and wife Kerri of Denver, Colorado, and Edith Bond and husband Brett of Baldwin City, Kansas; four grandchildren, Kelly Heerema, Korey Huerter, Kody Numedahl and Justin Bond; and four great-grandchildren, Brady, Emma, Gabrielle and Mason.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arnold and Raymond; and an infant sister.
Born June 15, 1920, in Calmar, Iowa, to Hartvig and Clara Wheatman Numedahl, he married Velma Staley on December 27, 1945. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. For many years, he worked as an engineer for the Cedar Rapids School District. Vernon was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, was a twenty-year member of Eagles Club, he volunteered for the American Red Cross, was an active member of Hawkeye Labor Union, and was a member of American Legion Hanford Post No. 5. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, fishing, latchhook, cooking and his dog, Charlie.
