Vernon is survived by his wife, Yvonne (Magor) Melcher and his two sons, Alan Melcher and David Melcher, all of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Opal, and his brother, James, who died in 1991.
Vernon was born on December 5, 1933 in Laurel, Iowa to Melvin and Opal Getty Melcher. He was married in 1958 to Yvonne Magor (formerly of Omaha, Nebraska) at the Methodist Church in Delmar, Iowa. Vernon worked at the Cedar Rapids Post Office for 36 years, retiring in 1992, and also at Coe College for 34 years, retiring from there in 2002.
Vernon served with the U.S. Army as a military policeman during the end of the Korean War. He was an avid "Red Birds? fan and was thrilled at the opportunity to see his beloved St. Louis Cardinals make it to the World Series one more time in 2006. He loved to watch sports of all kinds, and was an avid ham radio operator; a hobby he had since high school days.
We always need to keep in mind how fleeting time is and appreciate the moments we can share. We feel lucky to have had Dad in our lives for 45 years; we wish it had been longer. We should never take for granted the time we have with our parents.
Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post #298 of Marion.
