Vernon was born August 4, 1932, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Clarence W. and Agnes (Hlina) Heaverlo. A 1950 graduate from St. Patrick’s High School in Cedar Rapids, he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1952-1956. Vernon married Nancy Ann Mullis on September 26, 1959, in Masonville, Iowa. They later divorced. He retired from Quaker Oats after 37 years of employment. Vernon coached Little League sports and sponsored a women’s softball team for many years, (Vern’s Mad Batters). After retiring, he spent numerous years volunteering at Prairie Elementary Schools. Vernon was the recipient of the “Governor’s Volunteer Award” in 1988 and the J.C. Penney “Golden Rule” Award in 1993 for his volunteer service.
He enjoyed his time spent with teachers and students at Prairie, whether it was in the classroom or on the athletic field. Vernon had a good sense of humor and if you were on the receiving end of one his pranks or orneriness, you can count yourself as someone who meant a lot to him.
His most celebrated moments were spent with his children and grandchildren. Vernon loved reminiscing with friends and family. He made a tremendous impact on the lives of many people. Vernon was loved and will be dearly missed.
