Vernon C. Carie, 84, of 2327 Victoria Dr. SW, Cedar Rapids, died peacefully Friday, November 14, 2003, in his home, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Services: 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 17, 2003, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Jay Jentink of Calvary Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, November 16, 2003, at the funeral home, where a Masonic Service will begin at 5:00 p.m. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 63 years, Fern; a daughter, Jacquelyn Walker and husband John of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Michelle Horak of Tampa, Florida, Stacie (Patrick) Shannon, Keri (Trevor) Cook, Breanna Walker and Ryan Walker, all of Cedar Rapids; three great-grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Shannon and Aliyah Walker; a brother, Frank Carie of Bradenton, Florida; a sister-in-law, Esther Carie of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Naomi Trabu, Mae Simpson, and Dorothy LaVelle; and his brothers, Robert Carie, Tommy Carie and Mike Weatherwax.

Vernon was born October 25, 1919, the son of Frank and Mable (Usher) Carie, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, he was united in marriage to Fern Schneider on October 26, 1940, at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Vernon served with the United States Navy during World War II. In 1949, Vern joined the Cedar Rapids Fire Department and retired as District Chief after serving 26 years. Vernon then worked as Safety Director for Penick and Ford. He was a member of the El Kahir Shrine and El Kahir Foot Patrol, Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite Consistory, Kingston Masonic Lodge 676, and Malta Chapter 415 of the Eastern Star. He also was a member of the Jones Park Retirees Golf League, Twin Pines Shrine League, the American Legion Hanford Post 5, Past President of Firefighters Local #11 and was the first President of the Linn County Chapter of Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Vernon played baseball for many years in the old M & J League and East Central League in Marengo, Iowa. He also enjoyed golf, sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, traveling and spending winters in Mesa, Arizona. Vernon?s dedication and love for his family and friends was unwavering. He was always there with a helping hand and was a devoted husband, remarkable father and loving grandfather. His family admired and depended upon him for his wisdom and advice. Words cannot express how greatly he will be missed by those who had the honor of knowing and loving him.
