Verne L. Balster, 82, of Marion, died Monday, March 5, 2007, following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Father John Gossman will officiate. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 7 p.m. Friday.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; a son, Dan; a sister, Joan; a brother, Don; and a niece, Patti (Jeff) Schaeffer and their son, Nicholas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald; and a sister, Mary.
Verne was born in Lost Nation, Iowa, on September 14, 1924, the son of Verne Henry Balster and Ellen (Monaghan) Balster. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.On January 7, 1950, he married Ruth West in Marion. Verne had been employed at Rockwell-Collins.
Verne was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, American Legion Post 298 of Marion and Indian Creek Country Club, where he loved playing golf.
