Verna Ann Wagner, 79, of Atkins, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a lengthy illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Newhall, by Rev. Jack McClure. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Burial: St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Mary Nixon (Jerry) of Iowa City, Ann Howell (Steve) of Cedar Rapids, John Wagner (Shelly) of Traer, Mike Wagner (Angie) of Atkins, Carol Beltramea of Cedar Rapids, Laura Zalesky (Larry) of Cedar Rapids, Donna Wagner and fiancé Dan Dunbar of New York City, Dave Wagner (Heike) of Oldenburg, Germany and Julie Duncan (Geoff) of Seattle, Washington; 20 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, John Kuncl, of Royal Beach, Florida; and two sisters, Marie Reinhart of Walford and Rose Rossie of Omaha, Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Clara Kuncl; her husband, Dr. Donald Wagner, DVM; a special aunt, Mary “Teta” Sernett; a brother, Tom Kuncl; two sisters, Jo Fran Davis and Martha Zimmerman.
Verna was born March 7, 1929, the daughter of William and Clara (Viktor) Kuncl, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A graduate from Mount Mercy College, she was united in marriage to Donald E. Wagner on June 19, 1954. He died in 1984. Verna was a member of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Atkins Public Library Board, Atkins American Legion Auxiliary and Czech & Slovak Museum.
Verna’s passion in life was spending time with her family. She cherished the time spent together celebrating life’s special moments. She was a compassionate, loving Mother and friend, who touched many lives with her kindness and generosity. Verna will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
