Verla Mae (Ammeter) Henderson, 83, of Coggon, died Saturday, November 15, 2014, at her home following a brief illness. Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 20, 2014, at United Parish Church, Coggon, by Pastor Tony Thurston. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City. Burial: Coggon Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Merle Henderson; their six sons, Stan (Suzanne) Henderson of Paso Robles, CA, Steve (Connie) Henderson of Monticello, Gene Henderson of Manchester, Rick Henderson of Coggon, Verle Henderson of Jonesboro, LA, and Larry (Justine) Henderson of Coggon; 12 grandchildren, Daniel Henderson, Matthew Henderson, Tracy Erickson, Jill (Carl) Ries, Brian (DeAnne) Henderson, Brad (Donna) Coblentz, Kristy Henderson, Nicole (Chris) Gruber, Ashley (Michael) Ressler, Haley Henderson, Brock Henderson, and Brady Henderson; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Duane Ammeter of Cedar Rapids, and Darwin (Betty) Ammeter of Cedar Rapids, and sister, Sandy (Ron) Scott of Brighton, IA.
Verla was born July 13, 1931, in rural Ryan, Iowa, the daughter of Carl “Bert” and Blanch (Aldrich) Ammeter. She graduated from Coggon High School, and married Merle Henderson on August 26, 1950, in St. Louis, MO. Along with helping Merle on the farm, and raising their six sons, Verla worked for Savage Lumber, Linn Co. State Bank, and the Linn News Letter. She was a member of United Parish Church in Coggon, the Red Hatter’s Club, and the Quilter’s Club.
