Velma was born June 6, 1932, at home on her family’s farm in LaPorte City, Iowa. She was the second of nine children born to Doyle A. and Vera D. (Spence) Benson. Velma graduated from Center Point High School. She was united in marriage to Vernon Paul Roseberry on July 24, 1954, at First Christian Church in Center Point. Velma worked at Rockwell International, retiring in 1994 after 43 years of service, and later served as a hostess at Murdoch Funeral Homes for 20 years. She was an active member of First Christian Church, where she served as treasurer and taught Sunday School for 25 years, as well as a devoted participant in CWF, the Lioness Club, and the Center Point Historical Society. Velma also volunteered for political elections.
Velma had a lifelong love of golfing, a passion inspired by the golf course her parents built in Center Point. She treasured the trip of a lifetime to Europe with her dear friends Barb Ashlock, Naomi Dunn, and Neva Zieser. Velma left a beautiful legacy of giving and support. An avid reader from a young age, Velma fondly remembered her excitement to explore the schoolroom filled with newspapers. Her generosity extended to the community, as she enjoyed reading to children at the local schools. She also found joy in life’s simpler pleasures, such as playing BINGO, bowling, trips to casinos, and was crowned “Carnival Queen” at her high school. Known for her beef and noodles, Velma’s cooking was a cherished part of family gatherings.
