Vanietta A. Cole, 85, Manchester, died Tuesday night, January 27, 2004 at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood, Iowa, following an extended illness.

A funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Manchester, with Rev. Dennis Miller officiating. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Manchester, where the rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. Friends may also call for one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church. Burial will be at St. Mary?s Catholic Cemetery in Manchester.

Vanietta was born on November 16, 1918 in Monti, Iowa, the daughter of P.J. and Marie C. (Duggan) Coleman. She attended Pleasant Valley Country School. After her schooling, Vanietta worked at the Mental Health center in Independence as an aide. Later she moved to Manchester and worked for the White Castle and Arrow restaurants. On February 24, 1941 she was united in marriage to Dale F. Cole. The couple operated "Dale Cole Trucking? for twenty-two years. She and Dale later divorced. Vanietta then worked for the Manchester Country Club in the 1980?s and later as a home-health care aide for the Golden Age Activity Center and the Department of Human Services. Vanietta retired in 1991.

Vanietta was a member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church, Manchester, where she belonged to the Rosary Society. She enjoyed playing bingo, flower gardening and talking to her family and friends on the telephone.

Vanietta is survived by her three sons and their wives, Richard (Karen) Cole of Delhi, Kenneth (Kathy) Cole of Independence, and Larry (Paula) Cole of Manchester; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; one sister, Arlene Kramer of Earlville; a son-in-law, Ray Gudenkauf; and three sister-in-laws, Jeanean Coleman of Grundy Center, Dora Mae Coleman of Urbana, and Hazel Coleman of Manchester.

She was preceded in death by her parents, P.J. and Marie Coleman; her former husband Dale Cole; a daughter, Judy Gudenkauf; great-granddaughter, Amy Gudenkauf; two sisters and their husbands, Phyllis & Jack Peyton and Arbutus & John Robinson; three brothers, Donald, Duane & Pat Coleman; and a brother-in-law Robert Kramer.
