Valvard “Val” L. Blazek, 87, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Chicago, died Thursday, April 20, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Services: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion by Pastor Vicki Standley. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.
Surviving are his sister, Sandra (George) Abodeely and a nephew, Michael Benedict. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Val was born June 23, 1929, the son of Milo and Lera (Beall) Blazek in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Marion High School in 1947 and attended the University of Iowa for a year. Val then served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War for 2 years. He was a radio operator and was stationed in Alaska. When Val returned, he attended and graduated from Northwestern University. He worked as an insurance adjustor in Chicago. Val moved to Iowa in 2003. He enjoyed studying history, especially WWI and WWII. Val loved reading, especially history books, squirrel hunting, fishing, feeding the birds, and going for walks.
