Valera D. McBurney, 92, of Toddville, died Thursday, September 18, 2008, at the Hiawatha Care Center, following a long illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 22, 2008, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Leo Anderson. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial: Dunkard Cemetery in Midway.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Lou (Ernie) Paul of Toddville; her son, Larry (Betty) McBurney of Toddville; daughter-in-law, Edith McBurney of Toddville; a sister, Maxine Miller of Hiawatha; eight grandchildren, Jerry (Camie) McBurney of Toddville, Candy Rowe of Toddville, David (Diana) McBurney of Shellsburg, Sherry (Tom) Sparks of Toddville, Dean Paul of Toddville, Kale (Tina) McBurney of Toddville, Kala Liebe of Toddville, and Shawn (Brenda) Paul of Toddville; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and fifteen great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Caleb Cress and Faye (Oliphant) Cress Beebe; her husband, Melvin; her son, Allen; two sisters, Valeta Martin and Berneta Caldwell; and two brothers, Jack Cress and Melvin “Sam” Cress.
Valera was born October 3, 1915, the daughter of Caleb and Faye (Oliphant) Cress near Center Point. She married Melvin C. McBurney on January 1, 1937 in Toddville. He died January 12, 2001.
Valera loved to cook and was one of the best apple pie bakers in Linn County. She was an avid Cubs fan. Valera was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who adored caring for her family. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Valera’s memory.
