Una M. Swalley, 86, a resident of Heritage Nursing & Rehab Center, Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, January 8, 2009, at the care center, following a sudden illness. Services: 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 12, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Del Bear. The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, January 11, 2009, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Alan (Karen Green) Swalley, Kathy (Larry) Solem, Sharon Schreckengast and Alex Swalley, all of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Brian Swalley, Benjamin, Katherine and Leanna Una Schreckengast, Troy and Kyle Solem; a great-grandson, Colton Solem; and a sister-in-law, Albert VanderHamm of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; a grandson, Joshua Swalley; son-in-law, Stacy Schreckengast; two brothers, Leonard and Roland; and a sister, Trillis.
Una was born January 11, 1922, the daughter of Carl and Emma (Geuder) VanderHamm, in Ireton, Iowa. She graduated from the Iowa Schools for the Deaf in Council Bluffs in 1944. On April 22, 1949, Una married Richard Swalley. He died September 29, 2002. She worked for St. Luke’s Hospital in Housekeeping, retiring in 1986. Una was a member of the Word of God Lutheran Church For The Deaf.
Una was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who also loved the children of others as her own. She will be greatly missed.
