Tony I. Fetter, 78, of Walford, died, Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a long battle with cancer. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 23, 2006, at John XXIII Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Phil Thompson. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a rosary will begin at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil service will begin at 7:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. Christine Wagner-Hecht. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, with military honors.

Survivors include his children, Stephanie (John) Watson of Carthage, Illinois, Cynthia (James) Kendall of Lisbon, Iowa, Tony (Sheila) Fetter of Ottumwa, Iowa, Mark (Leanne) Fetter of Loves Park, Illinois, and Kenton Fetter of Cedar Rapids; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Fetter of Fairfax, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Andrew, Stasia, Brock, Desiree, Erik and Preston; two stepgrandchildren, Chelsea and Jerrod; and a great-grandchild, Jonah Anthony.

Also surviving is a brother, John Fetter of Ackley, Iowa; four sisters, Martha Van Horne, of Plano, Texas, Betty Tesar of Marengo, Iowa, Georgia Ann (Francis) Duffy of Humbolt, Iowa, and Peggy (Jack) Davis of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Norma Fetter of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dolores; a son, Greg; two brothers; and two sisters.

Tony was born July 1, 1927, the son of Lewis and Agnes (Dvorak) Fetter, near Chelsea, Iowa. Receiving his education from St. Joseph?s Catholic School and Chelsea High School, he served in the United States Navy at the end of World War II. After his discharge, Tony helped his parents on the family farm. On April 26, 1951, he was united in marriage to Dolores A. Jochims. Together they had six children.

After leaving the farm, Tony worked for Wilson Meat Company in Cedar Rapids from 1951 to 1958. While working at Wilson?s, he was appointed Field Representative for the United Packinghouse Workers CIO. Tony served as Vice-President, Recording Secretary and Chief Plant Steward of Local 3 of the UPWA. He also served on the District 3 Executive Board until his appointment to the staff of UPWA-CIO.

He served as the International Representative of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workermen of North America AFL-CIO and the United and Commercial Workers AFL-CIO, retiring in 1984. Tony will be remembered for his years of sacrifice and service which contributed to better working conditions and benefits for many individuals.

During his lifetime he coached Little League in Walford for a number of years. Tony also enjoyed dancing and sports. He was deeply loved by his children and will be greatly missed.
