Tom J. Svoboda, 67, of Alburnett, died suddenly in his home from a heart attack on Friday, August 19, 2005. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Dan Peterson. Burial: Lafayette Cemetery, rural Alburnett. Following the services, a luncheon will be held at the Alburnett Christian Church. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 23.)

Survivors include his wife of forty-six years, Betty; a son, Rex (Joann) Svoboda of Guttenberg; a daughter, Sonja Rae (Duane) Pfab of Alburnett; a grandson, Travis Thomas Wiegand of Alburnett; three brothers, David (Delores) Svoboda of Cedar Rapids, John (Diane) Svoboda of Marion and Steve (Shelly) Svoboda of Washington, Iowa; a sister, Theresa (Wayne) Alberts of Cedar Rapids; two stepgrandchildren, Michael (Jamie) Blume of Guttenberg and Donna (Greg) Herzog of Garnavillo; four stepgreat-grandchildren, Emma and Michaela Blume and Joshua and Alex Herzog; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tom was born the son of Thomas Emil Svoboda and Margaret Kathryn Kepler Svoboda on March 9, 1938, in Cedar Rapids. On November 24, 1958, he was united in marriage to Betty Butterfield.

Tom worked for the Iowa State Highway Commission for fourteen years and Shive-Hattery Inc. for thirty-five years. He had been an employee for the city of Monticello since May 2005. Tom served the city of Alburnett as justice of the peace and city council member. He was currently the mayor of Alburnett and a member of the Alburnett Fire Department, where he served forty-four years as a firefighter and fire chief. Tom and Betty were caretakers of Lafayette and Alice cemeteries for twenty-four years. He enjoyed working so much that he never retired from anything.

He was also a member of the Battle of the Sexes bowling league and a junior league bowling coach. Tom was a charter member of the Alburnett Lions Club and past president of Linn County Firefighters Association and a member of Iowa Firemen?s Association.

Tom and Betty cherished their time together at their cabin in Guttenberg. He also enjoyed playing the casino slot machines.

A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, he was dearly loved by his family and friends and greatly respected by his community. He touched many lives in many different ways and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
