Thomas Clyde “Tom” Merrifield, 62, of Marion, and formerly of the Troy Mills area, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at his home. Services: 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 18, 2009, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion by Rev. Al Christopherson. The family will greet friends from 1 ?" 4 Sunday, May 17, 2009, at the funeral home. Burial: Troy Mills Cemetery, Troy Mills, Iowa with military honors provided by American Legion Post #712 of Troy Mills.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Sally, of Marion; his children, Jody Hemann (Rick) of Marion, Jason (Tara) Merrifield of Hiawatha, Joshua Merrifield of Marion, Jaron Merrifield of Cedar Rapids, and Jennie Merrifield of Marion; 4 grandchildren, Katherine “Katie”, Brady, Nicholas “Cole”, and Caden; his siblings, Sharon Bowers of California, Nancy (Charles) Brown of Hiawatha, Kathy (Russ Aswegan) Fuller of Atkins, Patricia Merrifield (Darwin) Harmening of Bertram; and many nieces and nephews, including Scott, Christy, and Susanne.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Merrifield; a sister-in-law, Linda Merrifield and a brother-in-law, Robert Bowers.
Tom was born July 22, 1946, the son of Lynn L. and Grace D. (VanMilligan) Merrifield, in Troy Mills, Iowa. Tom served with the U.S. Army 1st Calvary in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He farmed on the family farm in Troy Mills for many years after returning from his service to his country. Tom worked for the city of Marion for many years and owned his own tax accounting business. He was very active in the Cedar Rapids Vet Center.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Tom’s memory.
