Thomas L. Shaffer

Thomas L. Shaffer, 93, of Fairfax, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, in his home, following a short illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 5, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Tom Carver. Friends may call from 9-10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial: Fairfax Cemetery, Fairfax.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marcella; his children, Gordon Shaffer of Springfield, Virginia, Dan Shaffer and wife Jan of Ely, Iowa, and Randy Shaffer and wife Marilyn of Mount Vernon, Iowa; his grandchildren, Andrew, Nicolas and wife April, Erin, Casie, Tony and Star; and two granddogs, Kashi and Indy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and J.D.; a sister, Lafonda Peters; and a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Tucker Shaffer.
Thomas was born July 3, 1910, the son of Israel and Elizabeth (Richards) Shaffer, on the family farm near West Union, Iowa. On October 12, 1947, he was united in marriage to Marcella Wood on the family farm. For 30 years, Thomas worked for Wilson Foods in Cedar Rapids. A resident of Fairfax for 35 years, he was a member of the Shueyville United Methodist Church. Thomas "Lefty? enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes and buying lottery tickets.
