Thomas Franks Sawyers
January 31, 1914 — August 29, 2003
Thomas F. Sawyers, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, August 29, 2003, at his home, after a long and wonderful life. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at First Congregational Church in Cedar Rapids by Rev. David Hohmann where the family will greet friends following the service. Graveside Services: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell, Iowa. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Gertrude of Cedar Rapids; his daughter, Mary (Tom) Comerford of Miami, Florida; his son, John (Julie) Sawyers of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Chris and Sam Comerford, Nancy Comerford Pado, and Matthew, Jenny and Ross Sawyers; and a great-granddaughter, Leanne Pado.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elsie Starr.
Thomas was born January 31, 1914, the son of Horace and Mary Jane (Franks) Sawyers in Donnellson, Iowa. On June 24, 1939, he married Gertrude Van Niewaal in Pella, Iowa. He attended AIB Business school. Thomas served with the US Army during WWII. He was the Vice President of Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company for 37 years and later the manager for West Side Mutual Insurance in Palo before retiring in 1980.
