Thomas Lee Kirk, 48, of 3792 Sunaura Drive NE, Iowa City, died Thursday, October 23, 2008, at his home, following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Services: 1:30 p.m. Monday, October 27, 2008, at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 3500 29th Avenue in Marion, by Rev. Chuck Kelsey. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial: Lafayette Cemetery, rural Alburnett.

Survivors include his wife, Denise of Iowa City; two sons, Kevin (Lori) Kirk and their children, Caleb and Olivia of Iowa City and Klint Kirk (fiancé, Jessica Zupek) of North Liberty; his mother, Mildred Kirk of Alburnett; his father and mother in-law, Denton and Donna Welch of Eldon, Missouri; his siblings, Karen (George) Caraway of Worthington, Minnesota, Ken (Joan) Kirk of Osage, David (Pam) Kirk of Alburnett and Pat (Gale) Jordon of Alburnett; and his loyal dog, Duncan.

He was preceded in death by his father and brother-in-law, Chuck Welch.

Tom was born January 2, 1960, the son of Clifford and Mildred (Sloan) Kirk in Cedar Rapids. On October 21, 1978, he married Denise Welch at the Alburnett United Methodist Church. He was employed at Hawkeye Ready Mix for twenty-seven years.

Tom was a member of New Horizons Methodist Church in Coralville. He was Vice President of the Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association, and active member of the American Concrete Institute, a member of the Iowa City Home Builders Association, and the North Liberty Lions. Tom was an active volunteer within his community including Habitat for Humanity, the construction of church and school projects, and he mentored local students in construction projects.

Some of Tom’s favorite hobbies were fishing, motocross riding, photography, and spending time in his woodworking shop. He was also a fan of the Packers and Hawkeyes.

Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and a friend to many. He touched many lives in many different ways and will be extremely missed by those who knew and loved him.
